Description: The real name of Sayaji Rao Gaekwad III was Gopalrao Gaekwad (1863 - 1939). After the death of Maharaja Malhar Rao, the Queen adopted him on 27 May 1875 and named him Sayaji Rao. The Queen got her adopted son coronated in 1881 at the age of 18 and he remained the ruler of the Baroda state till 1939. He made Baroda artistic and scenic with architectural constructions. He was also present at the First and Second Round Table Conferences in London. He played an important role in the development of Baroda's industry and encouraged the ban on child marriage, divorce law, eradication of untouchability, the spread of education, development of Sanskrit, ideological studies and religious education as well as fine arts.
He is also considered the father of the Indian Library Movement. Maharaja Sayajirao was also the founder of the Bank of Baroda. He was a patron of educational, social, cultural and literary arts. He provided financial assistance to many great men and institutions of the country and many institutions and individuals received assistance of crores of rupees from him. Maharaja Sayajirao ji always helped and supported the freedom fighters. His interest in literature and being a talented writer, this was the identity of his personality. His books, speeches, letters, orders and diaries are the priceless heritage of the country. Sayajirao, who wanted salvation by following the path of good governance and public welfare, dreamt of a strong India.
