Description: Indian Institute of Technology Bhilai -IIT Bhilai was established in 2016 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, as one of the eight new IITs created under the Institutes of Technology Act, 2016. The institute began its first academic session in 2016–17 and has since developed into a promising centre of excellence in engineering, science, technology, and humanities education. Currently, IIT Bhilai operates from its temporary campus at Government Engineering College, Raipur. Its permanent campus is under development at Kutelabhata village in Bhilai, located in Durg district. Envisioned as a modern, self-sustaining residential campus, it is being developed in phases.
The present phase is designed to accommodate around 1,200 students along with faculty and staff, and will feature advanced academic, research, and residential infrastructure. The institute offers a diverse range of academic programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate, PG diploma, and doctoral levels, with B.Tech and M.Tech programmes serving as its flagship courses. IIT Bhilai is committed to delivering high-quality education and fostering innovative research. It has established several research centres and maintains collaborations with leading national and international institutions. Recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education, the institute continues to strengthen its academic and research profile. Reflecting its steady growth, IIT Bhilai secured the 72nd position among engineering institutions in India in the National Institutional Ranking Framework 2025. The campus is well connected, located about 5 km from the Great Eastern Highway, 5.4 km from Durg Junction Railway Station, and 54 km from Raipur Airport, ensuring easy accessibility. Adding to its recognition, India Post, Chhattisgarh Circle, issued a Permanent Pictorial Cancellation (PPC) at the IIT Bhilai Sub Post Office, featuring the institute’s emblem as part of a Gen-Z themed revamped post office initiative.
