Description: The Mata Kaushalya Mandir in Chandkhuri, near Raipur, Chhattisgarh, is the only temple dedicated to her. She was the first queen of King Dasharatha and mother of Lord Shri Rama, who holds a significant place in the Ramayana epic. She was the daughter of King Sukaushal and Queen Amritprabha of Kaushal (Chhattisgarh), and her maternal roots connect Lord Rama to this region. Mata Kaushalya participated in the Putrakameshti Yagna performed by King Dasharatha to seek progeny. A portion of the divine offering from the yagna led to the birth of Shri Rama.
The temple features an idol of Lord Rama as a child and is surrounded by a serene lake. Built by the Somvanshi kings in the 8th century, the temple stands as a testament to Kaushalya’s revered status. Despite damage over time, it was restored multiple times, most recently in 1973. The State is considered Lord Rama’s maternal home. During Lord Ram's exile, and believed to have spent significant time in the forests of this region including around Chandkhuri. To honour Lord Rama’s connection to this area the state government launched the Ramvanagaman Path Project. 75 locations associated with his exile are being developed into a tourist circuit, promoting cultural and spiritual tourism. Kaushalya’s story exemplifies piety, maternal devotion, and her integral role in the Ramayana. The Mata Kaushalya Mandir, nestled in a picturesque setting, remains a unique and sacred destination for devotees and travellers alike.
