Description: Sihawa Mountain is a place where geography, mythology, and devotion intertwine strikingly. Located in the Dhamtari district of Chhattisgarh, it is revered as the origin of the sacred Mahanadi River, one of central India' s most important rivers. According to ancient traditions, this mountain is closely associated with the hermitage of Shringi Rishi, a revered sage in Hindu mythology. Nearby, on the southern slopes near the village of Ratawa, lies the hermitage of Angira Rishi. Mythological accounts recount that a king of Angadesh once offended a poor Brahmin, provoking the wrath of Indra, the god of rain.
This divine anger led to a devastating famine across the kingdom. Seeking relief, the king turned to Shringi Rishi, who performed a sacred yajna to appease Indra. The ritual brought rain, ending the famine and restoring prosperity. In gratitude, the king offered his daughter, Shanta, in marriage to the sage. The story continues with Dasharatha, the ruler of Ayodhya, who was anxious about having no heir. Guided by Vashistha, he invited Shringi Rishi to perform the Putrayeshti Yajna. Initially reluctant, the sage agreed at Shanta' s request. The successful completion of this ritual eventually led to the birth of Rama and his brothers. After fulfilling this sacred duty, Shringi Rishi and Shanta are believed to have returned to their hermitage at Sihawa. Even today, a temple dedicated to them stands atop the mountain, attracting devotees and pilgrims.
The site also features shrines of Shiva, Ganesha, and Hanuman, along with a yajna pavilion and several caves. A particularly sacred feature is a rock bearing what devotees believe are the footprints of Lord Rama, said to date back to his exile period. The mountain is also home to more than seven caves, one of which is known for a lamp that burns continuously. During Navaratri, devotees light “Manokamna Jyotis” (votive lamps), while Rama Navami is celebrated with great devotion. Beyond its spiritual significance, Sihawa Mountain is admired for its serene natural beauty, making it both a sacred pilgrimage site and a tranquil tourist destination.
