Description: The Pateeswarar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located on the banks of the Noyyal River in Perur, Coimbatore. Believed to have been built by Karikala Chola in the 2nd century CE, the temple has a history spanning over a thousand years and was later patronised by saints like Arunagirinathar and Kachiappa Munivar. The presiding deities are Lord Shiva and his consort Pachainayaki (Parvati), with a sacred Swayambhu Lingam enshrined in the Garbhagriha. During the Kongu Chola period, structures such as the Ardha Mandap and Maha Mandap were added, which also contain inscriptions recording temple donations. The temple later received contributions from the Vijayanagara Empire and the Hoysala Empire. A separate shrine, Patti Vinayagar, is dedicated to Lord Ganesha.
The temple is renowned for its exceptional architecture and sculptures. It features multiple gopurams, intricately carved pillars, and ceilings adorned with stone chains and lotus motifs. Notable sculptures depict various forms of Shiva, including Bhikshadana, Gajasamhara, Urdhva Thandava, and Veerabhadra, along with Saraswati holding a veena. A unique feature is the footprint of Kamadhenu on the Shivalinga. The golden idol of Nataraja in a graceful dancing posture is a major highlight. The temple’s pillars and wooden chariots display exquisite carvings, making it a remarkable centre of art, devotion, and heritage.
