PO Name: Thiruvaiyaru
Description: Thiruvaiyaru, a historic town near Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, lies on the banks of the River Cauvery and is best known for its association with the great saint-composer Tyagaraja (1767–1847). He is celebrated as one of the greatest figures in Carnatic music, admired for his devotional compositions and profound musical genius. His works, mostly dedicated to Lord Rama, reflect a deep blend of spirituality, philosophy, and simple poetic expression. Though Tyagaraja is believed to have composed nearly 24,000 kritis, only about 700 are available today. These surviving compositions continue to inspire musicians and devotees alike. In addition to these, he authored two important Telugu musical dramas Prahlada Bhakti Vijayam and Nauka Charitram which further highlight his literary and musical brilliance.
He trained under a respected scholar from the Tanjore court, mastering both vocal music and instruments. LTyagaraja frequently used the veena and khartal in his performances. The veena, a classical string instrument central to Carnatic music, holds cultural significance and is closely associated with Saraswati, the goddess of learning and arts. The khartal, a traditional percussion instrument made of wooden clappers with metal discs, produces rhythmic sounds and is commonly used in devotional and folk music. Thiruvaiyaru remains a vital cultural centre, preserving Tyagaraja’s legacy and continuing to celebrate his immense contribution to Indian classical music.
