Description:Thiruthani Murugan Temple, one of the six sacred Arupadai Veedu of Lord Murugan, is majestically situated atop a 700-foot rocky hill in Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu. Access is gained via 365 stone steps, symbolizing each day of the year and representing the devotee’s spiritual journey towards divine grace and inner peace. The temple is highly revered as the place where Lord Karthikeya, after defeating the demon Surapadman, laid down His warrior fury and found serenity. Hence, Thiruthani is also called Shantipuri — the “Abode of Peace.” Devotees believe that sincere worship over five consecutive days fulfills prayers and brings mental tranquility. Rich in mythology, the temple is linked to both the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Lord Rama is said to have visited Thiruthani after defeating Ravana to seek peace, while Arjuna worshipped Lord Subramanya here during his pilgrimage.
Sacred springs like Brahma Sunai and Indra Sunai are associated with legends of Lord Brahma and Indra. At the hill’s base, Saravanapoigai, a holy tank with mineral-rich healing waters, is located. Architecturally, the temple showcases classic Dravidian style with towering gopurams, pillared halls, and intricately carved mandapams. The sanctum sanctorum is believed to contain one lakh rudrakshas, adding to its spiritual significance. Annually, a remarkable solar event occurs over three days in March, when the rising sun’s rays illuminate the deity’s feet, chest, and head respectively, highlighting the brilliance of ancient temple architecture. The Thiruthani Murugan Temple remains a symbol of faith, peace, devotion, and Tamil spiritual heritage. On the auspicious occasion of “Vaikasi Visakam, " India Post Tamil Nadu Circle commemorates Lord Murugan's birth anniversary and issues a series of four PPCs.
