Description:Arulmigu Solaimalai Murugan Temple, Pazhamudircholai is one of the most revered shrines of Lord Murugan and is celebrated as the sixth and final abode among the sacred Arupadaiveedu temples. Situated about 25 km north of Madurai, the temple stands atop the lush Solaimalai hills at an elevation of nearly 1100 feet above sea level. Surrounded by dense forests, cool springs, and scenic beauty, the temple offers a deeply spiritual atmosphere to devotees and visitors alike. In ancient times, only the Vel, the divine spear of Lord Murugan, was worshipped here. Later, idols of Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli and Deivanai, along with Lord Ganesha, were consecrated in the temple.
One of the most famous legends associated with the shrine is the story of the Tamil poetess Avvaiyar. Lord Murugan tested her wisdom by asking whether she wanted “hot or cold fruits,” teaching her a lesson in humility and true knowledge. The temple is also known for the sacred Naaval (Jamun) tree connected to the Avvaiyar legend and the holy spring Noopura Ganga, whose water is used for temple rituals. Located amidst the beautiful Azhagar Hills, the temple combines devotion with natural splendour. This was praised in Sangam literature such as Tirumurukāṟṟuppaṭai by Nakkeerar and Cilappatikaram by Ilango Adigal. Saint Arunagirinathar also glorified the temple in his celebrated Tiruppukal hymns. On the auspicious occasion of “Vaikasi Visakam, " India Post Tamil Nadu Circle commemorates Lord Murugan's birth anniversary and issues a series of four PPCs.
