PO Name:Tiruparankundram
Description:Thiruparankundram is situated about 8 km from Madurai, Tamil Nadu. This is one of the most sacred pilgrimage centres dedicated to Lord Murugan. Revered as the first among the six holy abodes of Lord Murugan, known collectively as the Arupadai Veedu, this ancient site holds immense religious, historical, and cultural significance. The famed Subramaniya Swamy Temple at Thiruparankundram is celebrated as the divine place where Lord Murugan married Goddess Deivanai, the daughter of Lord Indra, after his victory over the demon Surapadman. Owing to this sacred association, the temple is regarded as an auspicious venue for Hindu marriages and attracts thousands of devotees and newlywed couples every year. The temple is an architectural marvel carved out of a massive monolithic rock hill and is believed to date back to the 8th-century Pandyan period.
The rock-cut cave shrines showcase remarkable craftsmanship and reflect the rich heritage of South Indian temple architecture. One of the unique features of this temple is that the shrines of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are positioned facing each other, symbolising harmony and unity among different Hindu traditions. Adding to its spiritual importance, the hill also houses the dargah of Sikandar Badusha, a revered Islamic saint, making Thiruparankundram a symbol of communal harmony and interfaith respect. The site comes alive during grand festivals such as Skanda Sashti, Panguni Uthiram, and Thai Poosam, when tens of thousands of pilgrims gather to participate in vibrant rituals, processions, and celebrations. Blending devotion, history, architecture, and cultural unity, Thiruparankundram remains one of Tamil Nadu’s most treasured spiritual landmarks. On the auspicious occasion of “Vaikasi Visakam, " India Post Tamil Nadu Circle commemorates Lord Murugan's birth anniversary and issues a series of four PPCs.
