Description: Kallanai, also known as the Grand Anicut, is an ancient dam built around 150 AD by King Karikala of the Chola dynasty. Located on the Kaveri River in Tamil Nadu, it spans the distance between the Tiruchirappalli and Thanjavur districts. This historic structure is about 15 kilometers from Tiruchirappalli and 45 kilometers from Thanjavur, making it an important landmark in the region. Recognized as one of the oldest water management systems in the world and the oldest still actively used in India, Kallanai showcases the impressive engineering skills of its time. More than 2,000 years ago, King Karikala embarked on this project to improve farming in the Thanjavur delta, a region known for its agriculture. The main goal of the dam was to control the flow of the Cauvery River and distribute water through a network of canals, which helped irrigate the fields and turned the area into a thriving agricultural zone.
Constructed from large stones fitted together without glue or cement, Kallanai reflects the craftsmen's advanced techniques from the Chola period. The dam stretches over 300 meters in length, 20 meters wide, and stands about 4.5 meters high. Its clever design has allowed it to remain stable over the centuries, demonstrating the builders' understanding of water flow. During the 19th century, under British rule, some changes were made to the dam to enhance its performance, such as raising its height to improve water delivery to the surrounding farmlands. Amazingly, the Kallanai Dam is still in use today, proving that its design was truly innovative for its time. This historical monument not only continues to support the local community but has also become a popular tourist destination in Tamil Nadu, attracting visitors with its rich history and remarkable architecture.
