Description: The Senate House described here belongs to the historic University of Madras campus and stands as one of the finest examples of 19th-century architecture in India. Constructed in 1873, it showcases the brilliance of Robert Fellowes Chisholm, a pioneer of the Indo-Saracenic style, which harmoniously blends Indian, Islamic, and European elements with touches of Byzantine influence. The building is centred around a grand hall, with spacious corridors running along the ground floor. These corridors are supported by six massive pillars on either side, lending strength and symmetry to the structure. Adding to its visual appeal are four towering spires at each corner, which enhance its majestic skyline and give the building a distinctive identity.
The Senate House also features six elegant verandahs two each on the eastern and western sides, and one each on the northern and southern sides creating a balanced and vintage architectural charm. The porch is equally impressive, with three segmental arch openings on the east, west, and south, reflecting careful design and aesthetic precision. Its roof, constructed using brick shell technology with lime mortar, demonstrates the engineering expertise of the time. Inside, the building houses a grand convocation hall, stately porticoes with parapets, meeting halls, and a library, making it both functional and architecturally rich. Overall, the Senate House remains a striking symbol of colonial-era design and continues to be admired for its elegance, craftsmanship, and historical significance.
