PO Name: Coonoor Railway Station
Description: Coonoor is a picturesque taluk in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, located about 24 km from Ooty. Ooty has been one of South India’s most popular hill stations since the late 19th century, attracting visitors with its cool climate, scenic landscapes, and colonial charm. A major highlight of this region is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR), a remarkable engineering feat. This narrow-gauge railway, built with a 1,000 mm track, runs over a distance of 45.8 km, connecting Mettupalayam to Coonoor and Ooty. Along its route, the train passes through 108 curves, 16 tunnels, and crosses around 250 bridges, offering breathtaking views of the hills. One of the most distinctive features of the NMR is its use of ‘X’ class steam rack locomotives, originally built by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works.
These locomotives operate on a special rack-and-pinion system, designed specifically to handle the steep gradients of the Nilgiri hills. This system ensures greater traction and safety, making the railway uniquely suited for mountainous terrain. The railway was founded in 1885, and the extension from Coonoor to Ooty was completed and opened in 1908. It later came under the operation of the South Indian Railway Company. Although it ceased to exist as a separate entity after 1951, the NMR has retained its historic identity. In 2005, UNESCO recognised the railway’s outstanding universal value and inscribed it as a World Heritage Site under the Mountain Railways of India. Carefully preserved in its original form, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway remains a unique and cherished symbol of India’s engineering and cultural heritage.
