Description: The Philatelic Bureau Building (Warwick Electric Theatre) is a historically significant structure located in Chennai. Today, it functions as a philatelic bureau under the postal department, but its origins trace back to the early days of cinema in South India. Constructed around 1913, the building was originally known as the Warwick Electric Theatre, one of the earliest purpose-built cinema halls in the region. At a time when cinema was still in its infancy, this theatre played a pioneering role by screening silent films, introducing audiences to a new form of entertainment powered by electricity. It was established by Warwick Major and Reginald Eyre, reflecting the colonial-era enthusiasm for modern technologies and public entertainment spaces. However, the theatre had a relatively short lifespan as a cinema. By approximately 1915, it was acquired by the Postal and Telegraph Department. 

This marked a major transition in its function—from a cultural and entertainment venue to a government utility building. Over time, it became part of the larger Mount Road Post Office complex, situated along the prominent Anna Salai. In its current role, the building houses the Philatelic Bureau, where stamp collections, postal artefacts, and exhibitions are maintained. It serves as a hub for philatelists and history enthusiasts, preserving aspects of India’s postal heritage. Despite modifications over the years, the structure retains its identity as a heritage building. The importance of the Philatelic Bureau Building lies not just in its architecture but in its layered history. It symbolises the evolution of urban spaces in Chennai shifting from early cinematic experimentation to institutional use. As one of the city’s lesser-known heritage landmarks, it stands as a reminder of both the beginnings of Indian cinema and the adaptive reuse of historic buildings.
