PO Name: Tiruvannamalai
Description: Tiruvannamalai, located in Tamil Nadu, is one of the most sacred spiritual destinations in India, deeply revered for its rich history and religious significance. It is best known for the grand Arunachala Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the famous Karthigai Deepam festival that attracts devotees from across South India and beyond. The town holds immense importance for Tamils worldwide, with its origins rooted in ancient Puranic traditions. According to mythology, Lord Shiva manifested as an infinite column of fire to resolve a dispute between Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma over supremacy. Unable to find the beginning or end of this divine flame, both acknowledged Shiva’s greatness. This incident is believed to have led to the formation of the sacred Arunachala Hill, symbolising Shiva in the form of fire. Another legend connects the festival with Lord Muruga.
It is believed that six divine infants, associated with the six Krittika stars, were united by Goddess Parvati into a single deity with six faces, known as Arumugan or Lord Kartikeya. The Karthigai Deepam festival, celebrated during the Tamil month of Karthigai (November–December), marks the highlight of the town’s spiritual calendar. On this occasion, a massive lamp filled with several tons of ghee is lit at the summit of the Annamalai Hills, representing the eternal flame of Lord Shiva. This Deepam is visible for miles and signifies divine light and knowledge. Devotees believe that participating in the rituals, especially circumambulating the sacred hill, brings peace, removes obstacles, and fulfils their wishes. Tiruvannamalai is thus regarded not just as a place of worship, but as a powerful centre of divine presence and spiritual awakening. In the image of the PPC Deepam artwork, a symbol of spiritual heritage is depicted.
