Description: The Srirangam Ranganathar Temple, also known as Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, is one of the largest and most significant Hindu temples in the world. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his reclining form as Ranganatha, the temple is a central pilgrimage site in the Sri Vaishnavism tradition. It is located on Srirangam Island in Tiruchirappalli, formed between the Kaveri River and the Kollidam River. Spanning approximately 156 acres, the temple complex is a remarkable example of Dravidian architecture. It features seven concentric enclosures, known as prakarams, which symbolise different stages of spiritual evolution. Within these enclosures are 21 gopurams (ornate towers), the tallest being the Rajagopuram, which rises to about 73 meters.
The temple is recognised as the foremost among the 108 Divya Desams, the sacred Vishnu temples praised in Tamil devotional literature. The temple holds immense religious importance and is closely associated with the philosopher-saint Ramanuja, whose teachings shaped the Sri Vaishnava tradition. Devotees believe the temple represents Vaikuntha, the heavenly abode of Lord Vishnu, on Earth. One of the most important festivals celebrated here is Vaikunta Ekadasi, during which thousands of devotees gather for special rituals and darshan. Other festivals and daily rituals contribute to the temple’s vibrant spiritual atmosphere. Visitors are drawn not only by its religious significance but also by its architectural grandeur, intricate carvings, and deeply rooted traditions. The temple remains a living centre of devotion, culture, and history.
