Description: Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, located in the Maduranthagam taluk of Chengalpattu (formerly part of Kanchipuram) in Tamil Nadu, is one of the oldest bird sanctuaries in India. It spans about 40.348 hectares, centered around a small irrigation tank, along with a 5 km surrounding protected area. The sanctuary is recognized internationally as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) and lies within the Coromandel Coast Biological Province. The terrain is mostly flat with gentle undulations and rocky plains. A 950-meter-long dam at the entrance regulates water flow and prevents soil erosion.
The sanctuary falls within the Palar River basin, and the tank reaches a maximum depth of about 5 meters near the dam. Water levels are managed through drainage structures built into the embankment. The climate is typically hot and humid throughout the year, with rainfall that varies widely between 400 mm and 1700 mm due to erratic monsoons. The tank contains Barringtonia and Acacia nilotica trees, which serve as nesting and roosting sites for birds. During the peak season from November to March, numerous migratory and resident birds such as storks, herons, pelicans, flamingos, egrets, spoonbills, and kingfishers can be observed. Bird droppings enrich the water, supporting aquatic life. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching from the banks or designated watchtowers.
