PO Name: Mylapore
Description: Mylapore, also known as Thirumayilai, is one of the oldest and most culturally significant neighbourhoods in Chennai. Located in the southern part of the city, it is both a prominent commercial hub and a historic residential area deeply rooted in tradition. Mylapore is widely believed to be the birthplace of the celebrated Tamil poet-saint Thiruvalluvar. The name “Mylapore” is derived from the Tamil words “mayil” (peacock) and “oor” (place), based on a legend in which Goddess Parvati worshipped Lord Shiva in the form of a peacock. At the centre of this locality stands the famous Kapaleeswarar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, also known here as Punnaivanathar, and Goddess Karpagambal, a form of Parvati.
The temple is an excellent example of Dravidian architecture, featuring towering gopurams, colourful sculptures, and a large temple tank known as the Kalyani. A significant feature of the temple is the sacred Punnai tree, associated with the penance of Goddess Parvati. Devotees believe that tying cradles to its branches blesses childless couples with children, while tying threads helps fulfil wishes. The tree, with its fragrant white flowers, blooms during winter and holds great religious importance. Historically, scholars suggest that the original temple may have been destroyed during Portuguese rule and later rebuilt by the Vijayanagara kings in the 16th century. Inscriptions recorded by the Archaeological Survey of India confirm its antiquity. The temple also houses shrines of the Nayanmars and carvings depicting Lord Krishna, adding to its rich spiritual and artistic heritage.
