Description: The Bhavani Sangame-shwarar Temple, also known as Thirukooduthurai, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Tamil Nadu’s Erode district. It stands at the sacred confluence of the Kaveri River and Bhavani River, along with the mythical underground Amudha River. This unique meeting of three rivers makes the site highly auspicious, especially for performing ancestral rites such as tharpanam. The temple attracts large crowds during Amavasya and Mahalaya Amavasya. The presiding deity, Lord Shiva, is worshipped as Sangame-shwara, and the Shiva Linga is believed to be self-manifested. According to tradition, the sage Vishwamitra established the Linga through the power of the Gayatri Mantra, which is why the deity is also called Gayatri Lingeshwara.
The temple complex also houses several important shrines, including those of Vedanayaki Amman, Murugan, Adhi Keshava Perumal with Soundaravalli Thayar, and the rare three-legged deity Jwarahare-shwara. Devotees believe that worshipping here helps relieve graha doshas and brings healing and protection. An interesting historical legend involves William Garrow during British rule. As non-Hindus were not permitted inside, three holes were created in the temple wall so he could view the goddess. It is said that the goddess appeared in his dream and warned him of danger, saving his life. In gratitude, he donated an ivory palanquin to the temple.
