Description: Adi Shankaracharya, a great proponent of Advaita Vedanta, stands as one of the most influential philosophers and spiritual masters in Indian history, was born in Kalady, Kerala, around the 8th century CE. He emerged as the greatest exponent of Advaita Vedanta, the doctrine of non-duality, which affirms the identity of Atman and Brahman. Though his life was brief, his contributions to philosophy, theology, and spiritual practice have remained profoundly influential for over a millennium. Having embraced sannyasa at a young age, he became a disciple of Govinda Bhagavatpada, belonging to the lineage of Gaudapada, author of the Mandukya Karika. Within this tradition, he systematised Advaita Vedanta and provided it with enduring philosophical foundations. His intellectual legacy is preserved in his celebrated Bhashyas on the Brahma Sutras, principal Upanishads, and the Bhagavad Gita.
Among the works attributed to him, the Upadeshasahasri and Brahma Sutra Bhashya are regarded as the most authentic. Through extensive travels, philosophical debates, and religious reform, including the celebrated debate with Mandana Mishra, he revitalised orthodox Brahmanical traditions. One of his most enduring achievements was the traditional establishment of four Mathas at Sringeri Sharada Peetham, Govardhana Matha, Dwarka Sharada Peetham, and Jyotir Math, which became important centres for preserving and propagating Advaita Vedanta. Through his philosophical genius, spiritual vision, and institutional reforms, Adi Shankaracharya established Advaita Vedanta as one of the most influential schools of Indian thought.
