Description: The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is an iconic annual event held on Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha in Kerala. It was inaugurated in 1952 by Jawaharlal Nehru, whose memorable visit to the region inspired the naming of the race and the institution of the prestigious Nehru Trophy for the winners. This celebrated race is part of the traditional Vallam Kali, or boat-racing festival, deeply rooted in Kerala’s cultural heritage. While the majestic Chundan Vallam (snake boats) are the principal attraction, several other traditional boats also participate, including Churulan Vallam, Iruttukuthi Vallam, Odi Vallam, Veppu Vallam, Vaippu Vallam, Vadakkanodi Vallam, and Kochu Vallam.
Renowned for its grand scale, the race features boats over 100 feet long, propelled by large crews of synchronised rowers moving to the rhythm of traditional boat songs. The event is further enlivened by colourful water processions, decorated floats, music, and festive celebrations, creating a spectacular cultural display. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is not merely a sporting competition, but a vibrant expression of tradition, artistry, and community pride, and remains one of the most cherished events in Kerala’s cultural calendar.
