Description: The Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, situated in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, stands as one of India’s most revered and historic Hindu temples. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it is famous for its spiritual importance, breathtaking architecture, and the intriguing mystery surrounding its vast treasure. With roots that date back centuries, the temple was significantly expanded and supported by the rulers of the former Kingdom of Travancore, who dedicated their rule to Lord Padmanabha and regarded themselves as His servants (Padmanabha Dasa). Designed in the Kerala-Dravidian style, the temple is notable for its towering seven-tiered gopuram, intricately carved pillars, spacious corridors, and stunning murals. The sanctum houses an impressive 18-foot-long idol of Lord Vishnu reclining on the divine serpent Ananta (Sheshnag) in the Ananthashayana posture. Tradition holds that the idol is crafted from 12,008 sacred Salagrama stones, which were brought from the Gandaki River in Nepal. The temple gained global fame in 2011 when several underground vaults were opened for inspection under the supervision of the Supreme Court of India. 

These vaults revealed a remarkable collection of gold coins, ornaments, precious stones, and priceless artefacts accumulated over centuries through royal patronage and offerings by devotees. The estimated worth of these treasures runs into several lakh crore rupees, making the temple one of the wealthiest religious institutions in the world. One of the main vaults, Vault B, remains unopened and continues to be enveloped in legends and religious beliefs. Today, Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple stands as a symbol of Kerala’s rich cultural heritage, architectural brilliance, and unwavering devotion, drawing thousands of pilgrims and visitors from around the world each year.
