PO Name:Kumarakom
Description: Kumarakom is a renowned backwater destination about 14 km from Kottayam, on the banks of Vembanad Lake-Kerala's largest lake and a vital part of India's largest wetland ecosystem. Situated in a low-lying area below sea level, the region is known for its tranquil backwaters, paddy fields, coconut groves, and traditional village life. It embodies the essence of Kerala's backwater tourism and sustainable wetland ecology. The area is characterised by an extensive network of canals, lagoons, and interconnected lakes.
The traditional Kettuvallam (houseboat) is integral to this landscape. Derived from the Malayalam words "Kettu" (to tie) and "Vallam" (boat), these vessels were originally constructed by tying wooden planks with coir ropes, without nails. Historically, they were used to transport rice, spices, and agricultural produce from Kumarakom and the Kuttanad region. Typically measuring about 100 feet in length and 13 feet in width, Kettuvallams are built using eco-friendly materials such as bamboo, coir, and Anjili wood (Artocarpus hirsuta). Propelled by oars, motors, and bamboo poles in shallow waters, these boats have been adapted for tourism with raised roofs, improved interiors, windows, and comfortable living spaces. Today, over 900 Kettuvallams operate in the backwaters, forming an iconic symbol of Kerala tourism.
The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, spread over approximately 14 acres along the lake's edge, is a major attraction. It supports over 180 bird species, including migratory species such as Siberian cranes, herons, egrets, and mallards. The sanctuary plays a key role in wetland conservation and eco-tourism. This Permanent Pictorial Cancellation (PPC) was issued by India Post, Kerala Circle, on 21 January 2026, coinciding with the second day of the 15th State-level Philatelic Exhibition, held from 20 to 23 January 2026 at the Kochi Municipal Corporation Town Hall, Ernakulam.
