Description: Tirunavaya is primarily known for the Nava Mukunda Temple located on the banks of Bharathapuzha. The Mamankam festival held here once every 12 years not only witnesses brisk trade, intellectual competitions and cultural festivities but also various forms of martial arts. Kalaripayattu is an art that is derived from two words, Kalari means "place of battle" and Payattu means "to fight" in Malayalam. This art was related to Hindu mythology, it is said that Lord Parashurama, the 6th incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was born to destroy an evil king. Lord Parashurama is considered to be the founder of this art and also its first teacher Gurukul. Guru Parashurama was a highly skilled warrior who had great martial knowledge and he passed on this knowledge to his 21 disciples.
This art is an ancient martial art that originated in Kerala. It is considered to be the oldest martial art in the world and the predecessor of all martial arts. The art is comprehensive in its practices and focuses on a wide range of disciplines including hand-to-hand combat, weaponry and even medicinal practices. Practitioners of Kalaripayattu practice martial arts as a way of life, embracing values such as compassion, discipline and respect. The art originated in the 3rd century BC; it is an armed martial art used for self-defense. The art form is divided into four stages, each stage consisting of one technique, and the form does not follow any grading system that ranks learners based on seniority.
