PO Name:Beypore
Description: Beypore, near Calicut in Kerala, is known for constructing the Uru the world's largest handmade wooden boat. Historically, it was a busy spice port, and for centuries, the Malabar Coast traded with Mesopotamia and Rome. This long tradition of shipbuilding led to continuous activity in the region. Wooden boats from Beypore once carried spices across seas and later became part of naval fleets, including the British Navy. Each Uru, also called a Dhow or "fat boat," is handmade without blueprints, heavy machinery, or nails. Skilled carpenters depend on traditional tools, ancestral knowledge, and wooden pegs to assemble the planks.
When steel cargo ships dominated trade and demand for the Uru declined, the craft nearly vanished. Its revival was sparked by Middle Eastern royal families, especially Sheikhs from Qatar, who appreciated its beauty and heritage. They commissioned new vessels, turning the Uru into a symbol of luxury. Today, the Beypore shipyards, along the Chaliyar River, operate year-round building these boats. Constructing one takes about two years and costs roughly 100 million rupees. Modern Uru’s resemble floating palaces, equipped with bedrooms, kitchens, navigation systems, and engines, all built within a handcrafted wooden frame. From ancient trade routes to royal yachts, the Uru highlights Kerala's rich maritime history and the artisans' dedication, making Beypore's Uru renowned worldwide as the largest handmade wooden boat.
