PO Name:Lakkidi
Description: Lakkidi is a small village in Ottapalam taluk of Palakkad district, which is in Kerala. Ottanthulal, also known as Thullal, is a Dance Narration Art form. It is famous for its delightful blend of humour, social commentary, and cultural satire. Thullal stands out for its unpretentious simplicity compared to the complex dance styles of Kathakali and Koodiyattam. Based on the Natya Shastra, this live performance is traditionally performed by a solo artist during temple festivals on the temple premises. The accompanying songs are characterised by their lively pace and are sung in the Malayali language.
A singer is also present to melodiously recite the verses of the performance. Thullal is accompanied by the rhythmic beats of the mridangam, Latham, and maddalam, which fill the performance with mesmerising energy. The artist who performs Thullal is called a Thullakkaran. The introduction of Thullal in the cultural scene is attributed to the Malayali poet Kunjan Nambiar, a great humorist of Kerala during the 18th century, and is also his birthplace. In terms of visual presentation, the makeup worn by Thullal artists shares similarities with the iconic makeup of Kathakali, which further adds to the charm and spectacle of this art form. The image of the PPC Image headgear Ottanthulal is depicted as heritage.
