Description: Saint Alphonsa, born Annakkutty, is one of India’s most revered Christian saints and a symbol of faith, sacrifice, and perseverance. She was born in the village of Bharananganam, located on the banks of the Meenachil River in Kerala’s Kottayam district, which has become an important pilgrimage centre in South India. After losing her mother at a young age, she was raised by her maternal aunt and faced many hardships early in life. At the age of thirteen, she suffered severe burns that permanently affected her legs, yet this did not weaken her spiritual resolve. At the aged 17, she joined the Franciscan Claris Congregation and took the name Alphonsa. In 1936, she took her final vows and dedicated herself fully to religious life. Despite frequent illness and physical suffering, she pursued education and served as a teacher, inspiring others through humility and devotion.
Her life was marked by trials, including illness, amnesia, and continued physical pain, yet she remained steadfast in living according to God’s will. Many faithful believe that Saint Alphonsa continued to intercede for people even after her death, with reports of miracles attributed to her. In 2008, Pope Benedict XVI canonised her, making her the first woman of Indian origin to be recognised as a saint by the Catholic Church. Her mortal remains are preserved at St Mary’s Catholic Church, drawing pilgrims from across the world. The legacy of Saint Alphonsa has also been honoured by India Post through postage stamps, a special cover, and a PPC. Her life remains an enduring inspiration, showing how faith, courage, and suffering can be transformed into spiritual strength and service to humanity.
