Description: The Sabarimala Sree Ayyappa Temple, one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimage centres, is situated amidst the eighteen hills of Sabarimala in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district. Dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, the temple marks the sacred spot where the deity is believed to have performed penance after slaying the demoness Mahishi. A distinctive and deeply symbolic feature of this holy shrine is the Ponnu Pathinettam Padi—the eighteen sacred steps leading to the sanctum. These steps hold profound spiritual significance for devotees and are regarded as a path toward purification and divine realization. Traditionally, the eighteen steps symbolize the five senses, the eight human passions (Ashtaragas), the three Gunas, along with Jnana (knowledge) and Ajnana (ignorance), representing the obstacles one must transcend in the journey toward spiritual liberation.
Devotional traditions also associate these sacred steps with the eighteen manifestations of Shakti and the eighteen Siddhas, the enlightened sages revered for their spiritual attainments and contributions to medicine, mysticism, and martial arts. The guardian deity of the steps is worshipped as Karuppaswamy, further enriching the spiritual heritage associated with the shrine. It is believed that devotees who ascend these sacred steps with devotion attain Punya-Darshan, receiving divine blessings and relief from hardships, sorrows, and poverty. Thus, the Pathinettam Padi stands not merely as a physical ascent, but as a timeless symbol of discipline, devotion, and the soul’s journey toward Moksha.
