Description: Neermahal palace, meaning “Water Palace,” is a magnificent royal residence built in 1930 by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, the ruler of Tripura. Situated in the middle of the serene Rudrasagar Lake at Melaghar, about 53 km from Agartala, it stands as India’s largest water palace and one of the state’s most remarkable architectural marvels. In 1921, the Maharaja, belonging to the illustrious Manikya Dynasty considered one of the world’s longest-surviving royal lineages commissioned the British firm Martin & Burns to construct a unique palace that would blend regal grandeur with natural beauty. Designed according to the Maharaja’s own vision, the palace took nine years to complete.
Its elegant dome-shaped towers, visible from afar, lend it the appearance of a floating fortress. Neer Mahal is divided into two main sections. The western portion, known as Andar Mahal, served as the royal family’s private quarters, while the eastern wing housed an open-air theatre for cultural performances such as drama, dance, and music. The palace contains 24 rooms in total, with two staircases leading directly down to the lake. Its rooftop terrace garden is considered one of the most beautiful in India. Although time and neglect have diminished some of its past splendour, Neer Mahal remains a symbol of Tripura’s royal heritage. Every August, the Neermahal Water Festival revives its legacy with three days of vibrant celebrations, featuring cultural programs, boat races, and swimming competitions on the lake.
