Description: Ujjayanta Palace stands in the heart of Agartala, Tripura. As a magnificent reminder of the state’s royal heritage and the grandeur of its Manikya dynasty. This gleaming white palace, now housing the Tripura State Museum, offers visitors an intimate glimpse into the region’s vibrant history, culture, and royal splendour. The Palace was commissioned by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya and constructed by Martin & Burn Co. between 1899 and 1901, at a cost of ₹10 lakh. It was named “Ujjayanta” by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. An exquisite example of Indo-Saracenic architecture, the palace features three majestic domes, each soaring 86 feet high, and is surrounded by Mughal-style gardens, tranquil lakes, and ornate gateways. Inside, visitors can admire tiled floors, spiral wooden staircases, and intricately carved ceilings.
Temples surrounding the palace, illuminated beautifully in the evenings, add to its charm. The palace served as the royal residence until Tripura’s merger with India in 1949. The Tripura government purchased it in 1972–73 for ₹2.5 million, and later housed the Tripura Legislative Assembly from 1973 to 2011. In 2013 it was inaugurated as the State Museum of Tripura. Today, Ujjayanta Palace showcases stone sculptures and relics of the Manikya dynasty, along with art, crafts, and cultural artefacts of Northeast India’s diverse communities, and exhibits depicting the region’s royal and tribal heritage. Respecting the sentiments of Tripura’s people, the government installed a statue of Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya within its grounds, providing a fitting tribute to its illustrious past.
