Description: The Mahesh Rath Yatra is among the oldest and most revered chariot festivals in India, held in the historic town of Mahesh near Serampore. Dedicated to Lord Jagannath and his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra, the festival is celebrated annually on the auspicious day of Shukla Dwitiya in the month of Ashadha (June–July). The origins of this grand celebration date back to 1397, making it the second-oldest Rath Yatra in India after the famous Rath Yatra of Puri. The festival was initiated by Dhruvananda Brahmachari, who established the worship of Lord Jagannath in the region. The presence of a 14th-century Jagannath temple in Mahesh further underscores its deep historical and spiritual significance.
The highlight of the Mahesh Rath Yatra is the majestic procession of a विशाल wooden chariot carrying the idols of the deities through the streets. Thousands of devotees gather to pull the chariot using thick ropes, an act believed to bring divine blessings and spiritual merit. The chariot itself is an architectural marvel, periodically rebuilt and beautifully adorned with intricate decorations. Beyond its religious importance, the festival is a vibrant cultural event. A month-long fair accompanies the Rath Yatra, featuring devotional music, traditional performances, handicrafts, and local cuisine. This lively atmosphere attracts visitors from across West Bengal and beyond. For many devotees unable to travel to Puri, the Mahesh Rath Yatra offers a sacred alternative, preserving the essence of the Jagannath tradition. Over centuries, it has evolved into a powerful symbol of faith, unity, and cultural continuity in eastern India.
