BIOGRAPHY
Vinayak Narahari Bhave was born on September 11,1895 at Ganoda, Raigod in Maharashtra.
He was educated at Government High School, Baroda where completed his matriculation in 1913.
He shifted to Benares in 1916 where he studied Sanskrit and became proficient in ancient Hindu literature and scripture.
He joined Mahatma Gandhi in 1916 and managed the Gandhi Ashram at Wardha (1921 – 1948) in accordance with the eleven vows.
He started the Sarvodaya Samaj in 1948 based at Sevagram and established ashrams across the country at Central (Indore) North ( Bodh Gaya), South (Bangalore) , East (Lilabari) and West (Wardha) (1948 – 1959 ).
He later started and headed the Brahma Vidya Mandir at Paunar (1959 – 1982) from where he propagated the Gandhian principles of universality, communal harmony, peace, nonviolence and animal welfare.
He attained Brahmanirvan on November.15.1982 at Paunar, Wardha in Maharashtra.
Independence Activist
He was chosen as the First Individual Satyagrahi against the British rule by Mahatma Gandhi on October 17,1940.
He actively participated in the campaigns at Nagpur (1923), Guruvayoor (1924), Dandi (1930) during Independence movement and was imprisoned by the British Raj.
Land Donation - Bhoodan or Gramdan Movement
He walked across India for over 13 years (1952 – 1965) and requested people to voluntarily donate one sixth of their land i.e. Bhoodan or whole villages i.e Gramdan which he then distributed to landless citizens.
He organized the first Bhoodan on April 18, 1951 at Poochampally in Andhra Pradesh and the first Gramdan on May.23.1952 at Mangorth in Uttar Pradesh.
He undertook Padayatras (foot marches) over the next 15 years which covered over 50000 kilometres and mobilized 4 million acres for Bhoodan and 18000 villages for Gramdan of the first donation.
He also propagated Jeevadan (Gift of Life), Shramdan (Gift of Labour) and Sampatidan (Gift of Wealth)
He advocated Sarvodaya for equality among of all sections of the society.

Awards
The Ramon Magsaysay Foundation of Philippines conferred on him its First Award for Community Leadership in 1958.
The Government of India posthumously conferred on him the Bharat Ratna in 1983. He became the third person to be awarded posthumously.
Titles
He was called “The Walking Saint.” in view of his innumerable Padayatras undertaken during his lifetime to secure his ideals
Books
He was a writer, orator, thinker, poly linguist and wrote extensively on social justice, peace and nonviolence.
He interpreted and translated Hindu, Christian, Muslim and Jain scriptures.
He edited periodicals Maharashtra Dharma, Sarvodaya and Sewak.
